Ship Mortgage Registration in Saint Lucia
Record, amend, transfer and discharge mortgages over Saint Lucia registered ships
Ship mortgage registration is one of the services of the Saint Lucia Ship Registry. Mortgages over vessels on the Saint Lucia register are recorded in the national ship register, where lenders, buyers and their advisers can rely on them.
What ship mortgage registration is
A ship mortgage is security given by a shipowner to a lender over a registered vessel. Recording it in the Saint Lucia ship register gives public notice of the interest held by the lender, so that anyone who searches the register can see that the ship is mortgaged.
Mortgage services
- Registration of a new mortgage
- Amendment of a registered mortgage
- Transfer of a mortgage to another lender
- Discharge of a mortgage once the debt has been repaid
Why registration matters to lenders and owners
For a lender, a registered mortgage is the usual condition for financing a ship. Priority between registered mortgages generally follows the order in which they are recorded, so lenders register promptly.
For an owner, a clear and current register makes it easier to refinance or sell the vessel. A mortgage that has been repaid should be discharged on the register without delay.
How to register a ship mortgage
The vessel must be registered, or in the course of registration, under the Saint Lucia flag. The mortgage documents are normally prepared by the lawyers acting for the parties and submitted to the Registry with the supporting documents and the fee. The Registry confirms the requirements and fees for each transaction.
If the ship is not yet on the register, start with Saint Lucia ship registration. For a ship that is already registered, contact the Registry using the details below.
